About the company
SHB Houses is a young, forward-thinking Portuguese construction company founded on Swiss heritage. We don’t just build "homes", we engineer houses with a cosy indoor climate all year long. We are a local company that speaks the language, respects the land, and understands the Atlantic climate, but we refuse to accept the "traditional" problems of local housing such as cold, damp, and mold.
The founder's story
Born in Bern and brought up in a nearby small village, went on to conclude an apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic. Went on to university of applied science in Lucerne (HSLU) to graduate as a BSc HVAC. The Heating- Ventilation and Air Conditioning subject includes a solid basic education in building physics as well as thermal comfort.

Through my 15 year professional work experience I have not only gained a lot of experience on the subject and learned what systems work and what does not. As a senior project manager I became to understand fully that in many cases simplicity is key to a successful project. That is why SHB houses maintain their indoor climate without the need of technical equipment that needs to be maintained and eventually replaced. As a side effect of working for well known companies I have learned the language of builders, and construction workers on the sites as well as the language of CEO's and CFO's. While gaining all those experiences I have build a vast network of specialists I can now rely and fall back on in case I need to expand my knowledge or to reassure some detail solutions.

Living partially in Portugal since 2020 I have had a good insight in the local culture, expanded my network here in Portugal and have seen plenty of construction sites. It hurts to see that there seems to be little progress to common problems. Probably not well supported with mandatory guidelines to comply with, many builders - even big companies - do not nearly meet what has been the standard in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and so forth for a long time. In my eyes the construction sector lacks engineering knowledge and customer oriented solutions that may cost a tad more to build but would enhance the product and the customers experience by a mile. This is where I want to bring additional value to the market.

Our founder continues to bridge both worlds, applying years of active experience in designing complex, large-scale climate and energy systems for Switzerland’s most iconic brands to our residential projects here in Portugal.

Planzer Transport (2.4M CHF): Retrofitting of a cooling system for an existing logisic warehouse within short timeframe - Engineering and supervising of the entire installation process including building automation.
Heilsarmee - swiss salvation army (120'000 CHF): Replacing heating system that lead to efficiency increase and significant reduction cost. Engineering and supervision of the entire installation process.
Lucoma AG (5.2M CHF): Engineered heating and cooling for a new production hall, cutting installation and energy costs costs for heating and cooling by 30 - 40% through smarter design, Engineering HVAC and installation supervision.
